Drinking water protection remains top priority for Moberly Public Utilities
(Moberly, MO – July 19, 2022) Delivering clean, safe drinking water to families across the community requires constant attention and monitoring water quality throughout the community. Flushing the distribution system is one step the Department of Public Utilities takes each year. Flushing the mains removes sediment from the water mains and brings fresh water to the ends of the system that may not see sufficient flows to scour the pipes.
Drinking water is vital to homes and businesses every day and the City is committed to keeping citizens informed. The Public Utilities Department proactively makes a short-term change in the type of disinfectant used to ensure clean drinking water meets water quality standards from the water treatment plant all the way to the faucet. This change is not permanent and is precautionary until tests across the distribution system indicate the change is no longer necessary, typically a few weeks.
On or around Monday, August 1, 2022, the Public Utilities Department will begin the process to switch from chloramines to chlorine. Hydrant flushing will continue until testing indicates that the measures have been completed throughout our drinking water distribution system. This process is anticipated to be completed in one month or less.
Water quality standards will be maintained throughout this process and water will remain safe to drink. Although not anticipated, some customers may notice slight changes in the taste or odor of the water from their taps. These changes are aesthetic and typically can be eliminated by simply allowing water to flow for a few minutes from faucets throughout the home or business to draw water in from the system. There may also be a slight, temporary decrease in pressure if the water tap is near a hydrant that is being flushed.
“The delivery of safe drinking water to our Moberly customers is our #1 focus. That focus is evident every day as department staff diligently strive to provide a high quality product,” said Director of Public Utilities Dana Ulmer. “This step is one of many ways we maintain water quality in our distribution system throughout the year.”
